3 I’m... a student at the University of Houston.
I’m 25 and am majoring in digital media. Matthew Caycedo 3

4 INTRODUCTION In today’s day and age, we depend on huge amounts of data to make our everyday lives easier. We use the internet for pretty much everything: Getting the latest news Looking for recipes Watching videos 4

5 INTRODUCTION (cont’d)
One of the reasons why It's booming is the easy accessibility of the data where everything is now stored in a “cloud” somewhere, hence the popularity of the term cloud computing. Please click on image to play the sound 5

6 CLOUD COMPUTING – WIKIPEDIA DEFINITION
If we refer to the National Institute of Standards and Technology: Cloud computing is computing in which large groups of remote servers are networked to allow centralized data storage and online access to computer services or resources. Clouds can be classified as public, private or hybrid. 6

7 CLOUD COMPUTING The terminology and the explanation behind it might sound a little bit scary to the average guy, but what it generally means is that whatever data that you access over the internet; is stored in someplace, somewhere in this whole wide world. 7

8 CLOUD COMPUTING (cont’d)
In other words, if you’re using Google to search for a telephone number of your local hospital, it might bring you to your national hospital website which lists down the name and telephone number of your local hospital; but that piece of data might be stored somewhere in say, Japan, for all we know. 8

9 CLOUD COMPUTING (cont’d)
Another fine example is let’s say we are using Yahoo and its complimentary Yahoo Mail as our primary account. Even though we live in London and we are accessing it from our machine over in London, the actual data might be routed from London to another location which typically remains anonymous to us. 9

10 CLOUD COMPUTING – IBM DEFINITION
The above are just some examples for us end-users, but to the corporate users cloud computing might mean more as explained on IBM’s website. Cloud computing, often referred to as simply “the cloud,” is the delivery of on-demand computing resources— everything from applications to data centers—over the Internet on a pay-for-use basis. IBM definition – YouTube video 10

11 CLOUD COMPUTING – IBM DEFINITION (cont’d)
What this generally means is that organizations have their own data but in order to host it on the internet, they are paying the providers based on their actual usage. 11

12 HOW IT WORKS To use the same example as Yahoo Mail, Yahoo is paying their provider a certain amount of money based on storing their huge number of users and their vast amount of e- mails associated to each user. In other words, this would mean Software as a service or SaaS. 12

13 HOW IT WORKS (cont’d) Then there’s the Platform as a service or PaaS model where your local hospital is hosting their Patient Management System over the internet and accessed via a web browser and it requires an active internet connection. 13

14 HOW IT WORKS (cont’d) The final model would be Infrastructure as a service or IaaS where the above hospital is using IBM’s service. IBM would then provide the necessary hardware to power up the hospital’s system and ensuring that the service is always available to the hospital to ensure no disruption to the hospital’s operations. 14
